The Blue Mermaid is a replica traditional Thames sailing barge which entered service in 2019 and is operated by the Sea-Change Sailing Trust providing residential opportunities for young people and vulnerable adults to learn and develop in a unique environment.
‘By living and working together aboard a traditional sailing vessel they participate in a wide variety of life skills and are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their contribution and group decisions’.
The Blue Mermaid will set sail from Brightlingsea on Tuesday 11 August crewed by young people from the local Teens-to-Twenties Group. It will arrive at Sandwich Quay on Saturday 15 August where it will be welcomed by Sandwich Heritage Harbour Trust and Tony Linton, Deputy of the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea.
There will be a civic reception to honour the arrival of the Blue Mermaid on Sunday 16 August whereupon it will remain moored at Sandwich Quay until Sunday 23 August. During this time, the vessel will be open to visit by members of the public during the day and will host a variety of paid-for events during the evening.
The Blue Mermaid will set sail from Sandwich Quay on Monday 24 August crewed by young people from Sandwich Scout Group, returning to the Brightlingsea area by Friday 28 August.
